Shauna (The “S” in Soy Is Joy)

I’ve always wanted to be a business owner but only if it was something I was truly passionate about. I have spent years looking for good quality soy candles in numerous states and places around the world. I have come across less than a handful that I became a repeat customer (2 to be exact). Therefore I decided to go with the old saying “if you want something done ya gotta do it yourself”. So I did and here we are. An idea was turned into research and that research quickly turned into testing and creation, and finally production. The only thing left, is to share it with you!

So here’s the deal, I know you can find candles everywhere, and for the most part they all smell pretty good, but there’s so much more to it, and I believe it comes down to the education of what you’re actually buying. This is how I want to help others. This is where my passion comes in. I became a mom in 2013. I have one son and he is my whole world. I quickly fell into that “crunchy” era that began around that time and haven’t looked back since. Ya know, the one where everything has to be “natural” and “organic” and “toxin-free”. You would have thought that all these years later more would be on board, but thats just not true. I still mostly see paraffin, or soy "blend" (spoiler alert, this just means they put a dab of soy in it to add it to the name). Is it because the consumer doesn't know better? That's where we come in.

My Personal Background

I've been a creative for 18 years. My background is web design and development and I am currently a creative and marketing director for a healthcare company. I am married to an amazing man, have the coolest 7 year old son, and we call Prosper, TX our home. We love to travel (mostly cruise) and are crazy cat people. I have a very modern and colorful style, love to attend art shows, musicals, festivals and concerts. We're not home bodies, and are very adventurous and down for anything. Fast forward to the recent days, and now I'm in the business of making candles, which is something I've been considering for years and finally decided NOW is the time! Who better to partner with than my aunt who is just as passionate about this as I am!

Jeanine Kirk (The “J” in Soy Is Joy)

I’ve always had a passion for fragrance and find pure joy and relaxation when my home smells fabulous.  Perhaps you can relate… I have invested thousands of dollars throughout the years on candles, only to be disappointed because the scents fell flat when I got them home and burned them. This is one of the main reasons why we started and are so passionate about our new company, Soy Is Joy. We believe that you can have fabulous smelling candles that fill your home or office space with amazing fragrance, that are also safe for your environment.

We’ve spent countless hours researching and identifying ingredients that are fragrant, safe and non-toxic, along with how to balance the perfect blends to ensure a rich and pleasing aroma. We believe when you purchase a candle from us you are also purchasing an experience. Our goal is to provide you with an amazing fragrance get away while sprinkling in some education along the way, as to the numerous benefits of purchasing only 100%, non-toxic candles. We hope you are as excited about our candles as we are, and we look forward to filling your home with amazing scents that brighten up your day and that your friends and family will rave about throughout the years.

My Personal Background

I've been in the healthcare industry for over 30 years selling medical software and services.  In my professional life, my main priority has always been to excel in customer support and service and foster happy, satisfied customers. I am happily married, have 3 amazing adult sons, 2 beautiful daughter-in-law’s, 3 grandchildren with another grandson on the way.  We proudly call Prosper, TX our home and love playing games with our family and spending time on or near the water. I am very excited about this new business venture with my niece and we look forward to providing you with an infusion of fragrance, for many years to come!

CANDLE EDUCATION

We believe in transparency, so before you ask, here are the answers to your questions:

What about your wax?

We are currently offering 100% soy candles, and are in the process of adding coconut and bees wax in the future.

What about your wick?

We only use 100% organic cotton wicks that are lead-free.

What about your scents?

We research, try and only use 100% essential oils.

What about your color?

If we use any color at all, we only use 100% soy, plant-derived colored chips. No artificial dyes.

See how many times we used the term "100%"... that's where we differ!

But why not Paraffin?

Crude oil is the origin of paraffin wax. Paraffin releases carcinogens and dangerous soot into the air, adding to pollution. Petroleum-based paraffin doesn’t come from a renewable resource, where as soybeans do. Paraffin releases toxic fumes when burnt and has the harmful fumes "toluene" and "benzene" which are linked to asthma and lung cancer. Soy, on the other hand, does not emit toxic chemicals. Paraffin has also been linked to irritation of the skin and respiratory tract. There have been levels of potentially carcinogenic polycyclic hydrocarbons, presumably due to the burning of low-quality paraffin wax candles over long periods of time, that alarmingly, the level of pollutants detected exceed that of high-traffic roads. Paraffin can also cause heat rash, minor swelling or breakouts, and should not be used if you have poor blood circulation, numbness in your hands or feet, diabetes, or any rashes or open sores, due to the petroleum (which is a by-product of gasoline). Burning paraffin wax candles that contain lead wicks also gives you low-level lead exposure. Ultimately, Paraffin is toxic, and it's poisoning you every time you light up your candle.
